“Suitable as a cow saddle” – with these or very similar words, we usually characterize the extension that does not harmonize with the main house.
Frankly unsuccessful and completely ridiculous architectural solutions are unfortunately found today almost every of us. In the vast majority of such cases, the idea involuntarily comes that such a house is better to demolish entirely and build in its place a new, with a harmonious design. Moreover, despite the fact that there are very harmonious projects of houses from galled logs, glued beams, stone, customers are still apparently embarrassed to use the services of architects and design based on their proportions that are understandable only to them by only one. It so happened with the house, which will be discussed below.
When I was asked a professional builder-builder to develop an interesting project of a new extension to the old mansion in the city of Montreal, I really had a rather difficult task.
The fact is that the old dwelling of the spouses Denis and Susan still serves as a very rare example of a classic Victorian style mansion. However, to one of the facades of this house, the house at one time was illiterately “touched” by a completely ugly bunk veranda-terrace. Moreover, by virtue of her dilapidation, she survived her last days and did not decorate the building at all.
The extension was a very simple frame structure in which single frame was installed. The walls were without thermal insulation.
The lower part of this extension was used by the owners of the house as an auxiliary utility room, over which there was a balcony, which could only be hit from the attic floor of the house.
The customers correctly decided to demolish the veranda completely and in return to build a more solid and original structure, which, according to their plan, was to become an organic part of this mansion.
